How can i enter the cheat code for the gnome after pausing the sims2 on Ps2?

ok I really need your help with this. i press start to pause the game. but everytime i i try to enter the cheat code for the gnome , nothing happens.it just takes me to whereever i put the cursor after pushing X. so does that code work, and if so please help me to get it working
